Doogee V20S Smartphone Review

Doogee V20S

Doogee V20S Smartphone Review: It has been almost three years since we saw the first Doogee V20 series. Last year, the company launched the Doogee V20 Pro with some improvements in hardware and design. This year, the company introduced a new option known as the Doogee V20S. Just like the previous generation, the company boasts of its highly durable build and massive battery capacity.

Moreover, they have doubled down on their efforts by incorporating new hardware support, a sleek design, and an external notification display. Apart from this, the phone has a pretty decent build with unique camera capabilities. However, the Dooge V20S had a limited release in the US, European, and UK markets. Now, the question remains whether this phone would be a decent choice as a rugged smartphone. Let’s find out more in the review below!

Doogee V20S Smartphone Review

Highlights

  1. The device comes with a 6.43-inch AMOLED panel with standard brightness support of 500 nits.
  2. As for the software interface, you will get the Android 13 skin with a wide range of features.
  3. At the same time, users can rely on the Mediatek Dimensity 6020 chipset with an adequate graphics unit.
  4. The camera setup features a 50MP triple camera setup with a dedicated night vision lens and a 20MP selfie lens.
  5. Under the hood, the phone will be powered by a 6,000mAh battery with 33W wired charging support.

Design and exhibition

The Doogee V20 comes with a sturdy build with two amazing paint jobs including the standard black and orange. On both models, you will get solid colors with a matte finish and a small display on the back panel. This AMOLED screen will display the time, day, date, and battery level. Along with this, the device comes with a glass-protected camera setup. The side frame brings a biometric scanner on the power button and other utility buttons.

But there is no denying that a higher battery capacity increases the weight of the phone, which weighs around 269 grams. It is considerably heavier than a regular Android phone. Anyway, you will find an IP68 and IP69K certification with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. After this, the phone works without any problems in extreme conditions. It works in almost all conditions.

As for the front display, the Doogee V20S is equipped with a 6.43-inch AMOLED panel that gives a 60Hz refresh rate and 500 nits brightness with FHD resolution. Being a rugged phone, the thick bezels around the corners are expected to be less. Apart from the looks perspective, the overall display experience is great as you can view content smoothly.

Memory and internal

Under the hood, the Doogee V20S brings the Mediatek Dimensity 6020 chipset, which can handle normal tasks without any issues. In terms of gaming, the phone lags behind the competition. The reason for that would be an under-processing GPU and less appealing visual support. However, you can play games like Genshin Impact on the V20s with smooth visual settings.

The overall performance factor is not a concern as it is what is expected from a low-end phone. But still, having a cloaked speed of 2×2.2 GHz on the octa-core process is quite disappointing. One cannot expect the phone to provide exceptional performance. Despite this, the phone is able to offer a stable Android 13 UI. The manufacturer adds its custom skin with a bit of bloatware here and there.

Some apps can be removed from the home screen, while Doogee service apps will require manual deactivation. Afterward, you’ll be greeted with a slightly cleaned-up UI. However, Doogee phones don’t have a good track record when it comes to providing Android updates. So, don’t expect software updates in the first place. Hopefully, you’ll get a 256GB UFS 2.2 storage configuration with 12GB RAM on this phone.

Camera

In the usual scenario, the camera setup of the Doogee V20S provides presentable photos and video recording quality. At the heart, you will receive a 50 MP main sensor that can capture beautiful photos. However, the main sensor has optical image stabilization. Still, photos in daylight can deliver attractive colors and contrast. Next, it is equipped with an 8 MP ultra-wide sensor with a wide view.

Lastly, the triple camera packs a 24MP night vision sensor, which can detect anything in the dark. It is quite amazing for those users who want to take pictures in low-light conditions. Also, the night mode camera provides pretty good photos. However, the overall camera results seem a bit AI-generated. The reason for this would be the color textures added by the beauty mode.

Still, selfies come out great with the 20MP selfie camera. On the front display, you won’t even notice the camera module as the dot-notch lens is barely visible. As far as video recording is concerned, users get up to 1440p video resolution with the standard fps support. The native camera brings a good number of filters, modes, and effects to delight users. But still, the overall experience is mediocre by 2024 standards.

Battery and others

The Doogee V20S has a bit of a bulky body thanks to the 6000mAh battery setup. Usually, this setup can offer up to 8 hours of screen time in daily activities. But what makes this phone more appealing would be the precise control over the screen time. Usually, a higher refresh rate drains the battery faster. Hopefully, the device has an average refresh rate.

Apart from this, content streaming and gaming would work without any issues. At the same time, you can top up the battery percentage via a 33W charger, which can recharge the phone in less than an hour and 30 minutes. But sadly, the factory did not add a 3.5mm jack port, still, the audio output, such as highs and lows, was quite accurate. As for additional communications and sensors, the support is not bad either. Lastly, let’s talk about the price of the Doogee V20S. It would start at $218 (Rs 18,299 in India) approximately, which is a great spot in the mid-range phone market.

Conclusion

The addition of a secondary display on the back panel is appealing on the Doogee V20S. Apart from this, the company delivers a pretty standard phone. You don’t get anything exceptional in the hardware, software, or camera department. But still, the display can provide above-average resolution with mediocre brightness support. Apart from the added corner protection, it’s just another mid-range phone.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a better phone, you should also consider getting the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro. This phone will offer you impressive benefits at a high price. Apart from the design, you get decent hardware, a camera, and impeccable UI customization support. But it might not have the military-grade protection like the Doogee phones. Ultimately, weigh the pros and cons to make a final decision.
