Samsung Galaxy M55s smartphone review

Pros and cons of the Samsung Galaxy A54

Samsung Galaxy M55s Smartphone Review: The Samsung Galaxy M55s was announced in India in September 2024 and went on sale the same month. Typically, Samsung smartphones are launched globally, but that may not be the case with this model. This is because this new smartphone has exactly the same specifications as the regular Galaxy M55, including 5G connectivity.

The only difference on the Galaxy M55s is the use of three different textures on the rear panel, giving it a unique look that no other Samsung phone has. The company really wanted to impress its users, so it decided to give the phone a great design, but the use of the same internal components made it a controversial choice.

Not to mention that the mid-range segment has become quite competitive recently, which is also not good news for a phone that does not bring anything new apart from the design. Let’s start with a detailed review of the Samsung Galaxy M55s and see if this smartphone is worth buying.

Highlights

  1. The Samsung Galaxy M55s features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ display with a high refresh rate of 120Hz.
  2. The smartphone is equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 5G chipset, which is capable of clock speeds of 1×2.4 GHz.
  3. The Samsung Galaxy M55s arrives with Android 14 with OneUI 6.1 for more customization options.
  4. The phone has a 50MP triple rear camera system with a 50MP selfie camera.
  5. The Samsung Galaxy M55s has a 5000 mAh battery with support for 45W fast wired charging.

Design and display

The Samsung Galaxy M55s features a completely new design with three different types of textures on the rear panel. It looks like Samsung went for a bold design choice with this phone and it turned out fantastic. The design is eye-catching and looks better than any other Samsung phone in this price range.

However, the body is made of polycarbonate, but it is of good quality, so it does not creak or bend of any kind. The side frame is curved, which makes the phone more comfortable in your hand and not easy to slide. The smartphone is quite slim at just 7.8mm and relatively lightweight. The Samsung Galaxy M55s phone is available in Thunder Black and Coral Green colors.

As for the display, this phone has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ display with a high refresh rate of 120Hz. The bezels around the display are quite thin, just like Samsung’s high-end smartphones, although this phone does not cost the same. The screen has an FHD+ panel, so watching content on this screen will be a pleasure. The display can reach 1000 nits in direct sunlight, so using the smartphone outdoors won’t be a problem. However, the screen has no protection and is also not dust or water resistant.

Memory and internal

The Samsung Galaxy M55s is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 5G chipset, which is capable of clock speeds of up to 1×2.4 GHz, just like the regular Samsung Galaxy M55. Upgrading other components inside the phone would have resulted in a significantly higher price, and Samsung didn’t want that, which is understandable. However, the company could have at least updated the chipset, but that is not the case here.

Don’t get us wrong. This is a decent chipset, but it will be two years old in 2024. Since its initial launch, four more chips have been released in the Snapdragon 7 series. Samsung could have offered any of them but didn’t, which is certainly disappointing. Nonetheless, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a capable chipset that can run your daily applications smoothly without any issues.

However, other smartphones in this price range offer much better and newer chipsets such as the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 or the newly launched Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. As for gaming, the Adreno 644 GPU can run games like PUBGm, CODm, Summoners War, Black Desert. Mobile and even Genshin Impact comfortably at decent frame rates. The smartphone also supports 5G connectivity for gigabit download speeds and better online gaming experience due to low latency.

In terms of memory and storage, the Samsung Galaxy M55s can be purchased with 8GB+128GB of RAM and storage and 8GB+256GB of RAM and storage. However, if you manage to fill up all the storage, it also supports a microSDXC slot for storage expansion. The smartphone runs on Android 14 with One UI 6.1 for better customization options. Samsung also promised to provide 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates with this smartphone.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy M55s is equipped with a 50MP triple rear camera setup. The 50MP main sensor manages to capture fantastic images with excellent levels of detail, high dynamic range and natural color tones. Samsung smartphone cameras have always been good, and the same goes for this phone.

The secondary 8MP ultra-wide camera can take some decent photos, but it’s not on the same level as the main camera. The smartphone also supports night mode and the camera sensors are optimized to capture more light than usual. This results in images that are brighter than ever and have more details.

The latest 2MP macro camera is completely useless and there just for show. On the front, you get a 50MP selfie sensor, which can capture great selfies with natural colors and even skin tones. When it comes to video recording, the smartphone can record up to 4K at 30 FPS from both the main rear camera and the selfie camera. The main rear camera has OIS and gyro-EIS, so videos recorded with this camera have very stable images, but the same cannot be said for the selfie camera.

Battery and others

The new Samsung Galaxy M55s is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery that can last 1-2 days with lighter use. This includes some camming, texting, social media, and some calling. However, the battery will drain faster if you play a lot of games and the smartphone may not last a full day. The same goes for downloading movies over 5G, which can have a considerable impact on battery performance.

On a positive note, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy M55s with 45W wired fast charging support, so you can fully charge the smartphone in less than an hour and a half. Apart from that, the smartphone supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, an under-display fingerprint sensor, NFC, and a USB Type-C connector for charging. The smartphone is available for $240 (Rs 19,999 in India) approximately.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy M55s had a very controversial launch as it did not bring anything new except the design change, but it was launched at a lower price than its predecessor and essentially replaced the original model. Having the same specs as the original M55 gave it a bad name, but it’s actually a decent phone now due to its lower price.

The screen, memory, sound, camera and even the fingerprint sensors are quite good, just like the original Galaxy M55. Not to mention, we really loved the new design and it feels pretty good in the hand. It’s a decent phone on its own, but it became controversial due to its tie-up with the Galaxy M55. However, if that doesn’t matter to you and you just want a new smartphone, then this phone is recommended, especially considering the four years of operating system and five years of security updates.

The best alternative to this phone would be the OnePlus Nord CE 4, which offers a better chipset, IP rating, higher battery capacity, and much faster charging speed for a slightly higher price than the Samsung phone. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.
