TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper Smartphones Review: The TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper are the latest smartphone releases from TCL. The two phones are almost identical, save for a few changes to the storage, selfie sensor, and SIM card slot. They were announced in September 2024 and will start shipping by the end of that month. They will be launched in Europe first, but should be available in more regions soon.

In terms of design, both the phones look similar to the Realme Narzo phones launched in 2024. Also, TCL claims that both these phones have fantastic features for the price, but that’s something we’ll find out for sure. So, let’s get started with a detailed review of the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper and see if these smartphones are worth buying.

Highlights

  1. Both the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper feature the same 6.8-inch IPS display with 120Hz high refresh rate support.
  2. The new smartphones feature the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 5G SoC, which can reach clock speeds of up to 2×2.4 GHz.
  3. Both the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper come with Android 14 out of the box with a stock UI for a better user experience.
  4. Both smartphones feature the same 108MP rear camera system. For the selfie camera, the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper has a 32MP selfie sensor, while the TCL 50 NxtPaper has an 8MP selfie sensor.
  5. The TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper have the same 5010mAh battery with 33W wired fast charging support.

Design and exhibition

The design of the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and the 50 NxtPaper is identical. They are even available in the same color options such as Moon Gray, Midnight Blue, Pale Gold, and Rosy Purple. However, the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper model will be available in one more color, Alps White, which seems to be quite impressive.

Both smartphones have a flat design, where the sides, middle frame, and back panel are flat. However, the corners are curved, which provides better usability. The body of the phone is made entirely of plastic, but at least it won’t break with the first drop. Both phones are very well built, and you won’t notice any bending or creaking with normal use.

As for the display, both phones have the same 6.8-inch IPS display with support for a high 120Hz refresh rate. They have a fairly accurate color space and can get quite bright under direct sunlight, which should improve the user experience. However, there’s no dust and water resistance or screen protection of any kind.

Memory and internal

Both the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper are equipped with the same MediaTek Dimensity 6300 5G chipset, which can reach clock speeds of up to 2×2.4GHz. This level of performance is enough to run all of your everyday apps with ease, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and more.

Even the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU has enough raw performance to run games like Black Desert Mobile, CODm, Summoners War, PUBG Mobile, and Genshin Impact at decent frame rates. Also, most of the games running on this phone should not have any heating issues. As far as the software is concerned, the new smartphones run on Android 14 out of the box with a stock UI for a better user experience.

The TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and TCL 50 NxtPaper support 5G connectivity, so you can download content at gigabit speeds. In terms of RAM and storage, the TCL 50 NxtPaper has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. While the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper has 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Camera

Both the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and the 50 NxtPaper feature the same 108MP rear camera system. The 108MP main sensor captures some excellent images in this price category. These images have a high level of detail, better clarity, and a natural color tone. The sensor is properly optimized to capture as much detail as possible.

The secondary 8MP ultra-wide camera is pretty average, but some of the photos can turn out great. These photos tend to have enough detail to post on social media platforms. However, the third 2MP camera is pretty useless and won’t help you in any way. On the front, the TCL 50 NxtPaper has an 8MP selfie camera, which takes some pretty decent selfies.

While the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper has a 32MP sensor, which captures some incredibly great selfies. As for video recording, both smartphones can record videos at up to 1080p at 30 FPS from both the rear camera and the selfie camera. The lack of 4K resolution might be disappointing for some users.

Battery and others

Both the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and 50 NxtPaper have the same long-lasting 5010mAh battery, which should provide between 1-3 days of battery life on low to medium usage. However, intensive usage and gaming will drain the battery faster, and the two smartphones may not last a full day.

However, there’s nothing to worry about as both the smartphones come with support for 33W fast charging. It should fully charge the smartphone in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. Apart from that, both the smartphones have Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, GPS, stereo speakers, and a USB Type-C port for charging. The TCL 50 NxtPaper will be available for a price of $297 (Rs 24,999 in India) approximately, while the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper is available starting at $333 (Rs 27,990 in India) approximately.

Conclusion

The TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper and the TCL 50 NxtPaper are both fantastic smartphones. They don’t cost much, unless you buy the Pro model, which only has a handful of extra features that aren’t worth paying double for. Plus, the two smartphones are nearly identical, so they’ll look and function the same most of the time.

The design and display of both the phones are pretty decent. The chipset is also excellent and can run many games smoothly. Even the camera, battery, and charging performance are also pretty good. Considering all the features of the TCL 50 NxtPaper, the price is acceptable, but the same cannot be said about the TCL 50 Pro NxtPaper. You should ignore the Pro variant.

If you want an alternative smartphone, you can look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro, which not only has better features but also costs less. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.
