Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT official now: bring spatial design and vivid color concepts
Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT official now
Today marks an important moment for Huawei and its global fans as the company officially unveiled HarmonyOS NEXT “Galaxy Edition” at the Harmony Ecology conference. The developer preview is now open for applications and commercial release is planned for Q4 2024.
Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT, known as HarmonyOS Galaxy Edition in Chinese, introduces a range of design concepts such as “Spatial”, “Vivid Colors” and “Immersive”. The user interface undergoes substantial changes, with a floating effect between components to improve the three-dimensional experience. Clearer color distinctions in integrated applications simplify usability.
The new user interface reflects major improvements, emphasizing native refinement, applications, fluidity, security, intelligence and interconnection: a holistic approach for the ultimate user experience. HarmonyOS NEXT uses the self-developed Harmony kernel with a revolutionary “heterogeneous native” parallel mechanism, increasing memory management efficiency three times.
Yu Chengdong highlighted that the HarmonyOS kernel goes beyond traditional kernels, seamlessly adapting to various device scenarios. The HarmonyOS system presents itself as a complete operating system, developed from the programming language to the compiler, eliminating the dependency on the Linux kernel or AOSP.
Currently, more than 200 HarmonyOS native apps are in development, covering a wide range of commonly used applications. More than half of China’s top 200 mobile apps have launched HarmonyOS native app development. The HarmonyOS developer community is growing rapidly, with over 10,000 new registrations per day.
Key industries including social media, audio and video, gaming, finance and food have adopted the HarmonyOS ecosystem, with major players including Alipay, Jingdong, Xiaohongshu and Meituan. Huawei encourages developers through the HarmonyOS NEXT Developer Preview website, offering comprehensive hardware and software online services. This includes detailed application qualification audits, a development white paper, development kits, tutorials and much more.
Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT unlocks vertical domain innovation capabilities for partners, providing the tri-partite HarmonyOS SDK for efficient full-link development tools. With an ecosystem of over 800 million Huawei devices (700 million as of August 2023), the company aims to become an industry leader in various scenarios, creating a new blue ocean in a multi-billion dollar market.
The “Galaxy Plan” was announced by Huawei, committing more than 7 billion RMB to encourage HarmonyOS native applications, meta-services, SDKs and other green innovations. This initiative aims to quickly build a stronger and richer ecosystem.
The operating system base of HarmonyOS includes the Pangu AI model, MindSpore AI Framework, the DevEco Studio/DevEco Testing integrated development environment, the HarmonyOS Design system, the ArkUI/ArkUI-X programming framework, the compiler and runtime environment Ark Compiler/Bisheng Compiler/Ark Runtime, ArkTS/Cangjie programming language and EROFS/HMDFS distributed file system for file management.
According to the current plan, Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy Edition will release the developer beta in the second quarter and launch the official commercial version in the fourth quarter.
