In a bid to reduce production costs and potentially lead to more affordable foldable smartphones, Samsung Display is exploring a new method of manufacturing the frames of its foldable OLED panels, as reported by TheElec.
The South Korean tech giant plans to adopt inkjet printing technology to make the frames of its upcoming foldable mobile phones expected to hit the market later this year, according to inside sources. This change marks a departure from Segyung Hitech’s previous use of Micro Dry Process Decoration (MDD) for creating eyewear.
Until last year, Samsung Display relied on MDD to produce films that would then be cut to form the frames. The ink needed to create the glasses was incorporated into these films. However, the change to inkjet printing results in a significant change in the initial film length. Comparatively longer films are produced by inkjet printing, allowing more bezel-forming films to be extracted from the original production. This efficiency in material usage directly contributes to cost savings, providing Samsung with the opportunity to reduce the price of its foldable smartphones.
Cost reduction has been a constant request from Samsung to Samsung Display for its foldable OLED panels. Exploring alternative manufacturing methods aligns with Samsung’s commitment to making foldable technology more accessible to a broader consumer base.
OLED panel bezels play a crucial role in hiding internal circuits and components. Once the panels are encapsulated in thin films to protect them from oxygen and water, the frame films are attached. Then, ultra-thin glasses are laminated onto the panels to complete the production process.
Samsung Display’s strategic move toward inkjet printing for framing not only signifies a potential breakthrough in profitability, but also highlights continued innovation in foldable display technology. As the company moves forward with these advancements, consumers can expect more competitive pricing in the foldable smartphone market, making cutting-edge technology more accessible than ever.
